Watch Charlize Theron Beat Up Her Trainers to Prepare for Atomic Blonde
Atomic Blonde was not supposed to look this intense. The original fight choreography wasn't as brutally bone-crushing as the first trailers tease. But then Charlize Theron, action movie veteran from Mad Max: Fury Road, Aeon Flux, and more, walked onto set. "When we saw her abilities, that really hit the lightbulb for us. We've got something special here. Lets try to push this," says stunt coordinator Sam Hargrave in a newly released mini-feature. They pushed it by eliminating quick camera cuts between stunts, instead allowing Theron to go through move after move after move in a single, exhausting shot. They considered how a woman would fight, throwing three punches to counter a man's single punch. And they filmed every fight scene until Theron got it right. "These stunt guys took so many hits, I had to buy a lot of alcohol to be forgiven," Theron said.
Theron learned her choreography through old ballet instincts and discipline. "I love discipline. I function really well within the parameters of discipline and knowing what to do," she recently told W. More specifically, she worked with eight trainers for months. She sparred with Keanu Reeves, who was preparing for John Wick 2 (from the same director) at the same gym. She literally threw around some "big dudes," because the script said she had to throw around big dudes. She also cracked two teeth. This movie looks unstoppable.
