The Peace School
"We're so proud to have founded Peace Day in Chicago way back in 1978 - we've not only continued wonderful annual events since then, but have expanded the reach of Peace Day in city neighborhoods and Chicago Public Schools ..."
Wanderlust Weekly: Congrats on the growth of The Peace School! What inspired it's creation? Jennifer Kim: The Peace School was founded on the idea that everyone can help build peace in our world, that individual peace and world peace are intertwined, and that practices such as peace yoga, peace breathing and even traditional martial art contribute to inner and outer peace. We've been teaching people how to practice peace in everyday life for 45 years now!
Wanderlust Weekly: You've built a strong community following in Chicago, what are some of your proudest moments? Jennifer Kim: We're so proud to have founded Peace Day in Chicago way back in 1978 - we've not only continued wonderful annual events since then, but have expanded the reach of Peace Day in city neighborhoods and Chicago Public Schools. Another proud moment was watching blind elementary school students gain confidence and master techniques through Self Awareness Through Self Defense, a program we created at the request of a teacher working with visually impaired students and their peers. And there's always great satisfaction when we hear from people years later who still experience tremendous benefits from their continued practice of Peace Breathing.
Wanderlust Weekly: We wish you continued success in 2017, what upcoming news or developments can we look forward to? Jennifer Kim: Each month we're holding a Call to Peace at our center, a public gathering of meditation-in-action for peace in the neighborhoods of Chicago, the US states and the countries of the world. We also have a daily Call to Peace honoring one world nation each day on Facebook so people can join in from anywhere in the world. This year's big Peace Day in Chicago event will be downtown in Daley Plaza on Sept 22 this year - communities and cultures coming together for peace! [ learn more ]
