Wanderlust Weekly: Congrats on the growth of Zalla Pilates! What inspired its creation? Jessie Zalla: Zalla Pilates was created to heal people, make people strong from the inside out and help people to understand how their body works. Many people don’t realize that Pilates was created to bring health and ease back to the body. It is our goal to make you feel the best you can feel while working, standing, sitting, etc. You take Pilates with you out of the studio and into your life. I personally found Pilates in 1997. I was dancing professionally and had incredible back pain. Through Pilates I learned how to stand, sit, dance and exist in a whole new way. I got strong in a way that supported my posture and I learned how to recognize if I was hanging on to old patterns of moving that weren’t helping me to feel my best. I was inspired to share this with the world.
Wanderlust Weekly: You've built a strong community following in Brooklyn, what are some of your most rewarding moments? Jessie Zalla: We get rewarded daily by the progress of our students and watching our students walk out the door feeling great. Pilates is amazing because everyone starts as a beginner and learns to advance in ways they never knew they were capable of. Pilates is a system that helps you to breathe more capaciously, center your body and mind, uniformly strengthen your whole body and become leaner and more flexible in both body and mind. It doesn’t have to be complicated. The students who don’t think they are strong or flexible enough to do Pilates are the most rewarding. Watching them come to life, watching them get to know their bodies and witnessing them feeling their best. We are lucky we get to see that daily.
Wanderlust Weekly: The wellness field is constantly evolving, what upcoming news or developments can we look forward to? Jessie Zalla: In addition to our weekly schedule we will be starting spring/summer outdoor classes on the pier in Greenpoint, Brooklyn as well as monthly Meditations with Jennifer Dopierala (www.findingtheheartofthewarrior.com) In September I will be teaching Zalla Pilates on a retreat in Greece led by Nicole Casinova.
